Acelleron in Andover, MA Welcomes Large Donation of Breastmilk to Support Fragile Babies served by Mothers’ Milk Bank Northeast

Acelleron is delighted to continue serving fragile babies by being a human milk depot for Mothers’ Milk Bank Northeast. A milk depot is a local drop off option for mothers who have completed a health screening with the milk bank and are ready to share their extra milk with babies in need. Acelleron has been a milk depot since 2016. Join us to celebrate the potentially life saving 200 ounces of breastmilk that Brittany, mom of five busy children including a set of twins and an account coordinator and lactation counselor with Acelleron, is donating to help care for babies in need on Wednesday, October 12 at 3pm.

Human milk can be lifesaving for preterm infants. It is especially protective against a life-threatening condition called necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), which affects one in ten of the smallest preterm infants. Human breastmilk is estimated to lower the risk of this condition by 79%. It also lowers hospital costs by reducing costs for care and shortening hospital stays.

A milk bank collects milk from healthy mothers who have more milk than their own baby needs, then screens, pasteurizes, and tests the milk, and dispenses it primarily to premature and sick babies whose mothers do not have enough milk for them.

Acelleron is a health and wellness company that serves the needs of families, by helping them receive breast pumps through their insurance. Acelleron employees are well aware of the importance of breastfeeding and are always there to offer support. Donor milk is a vital medical resource to protect the health and well-being of premature babies and so Acelleron is an enthusiastic partner of Mothers’ Milk Bank Northeast.

“Milk donation is something I am especially familiar with. I have worked at an office that houses and runs a donor depot for Mother’s Milk Bank Northeast for years. A milk depot is a location where local moms who have already been through the screening process can drop off their milk donations. It has been so special to get to know many breast milk donors through my work running our depot. And I’ve loved meeting and working with the amazing staff at Mothers’ Milk Bank Northeast. They are all incredible and so dedicated to what they do for families and fragile babies.”commented Brittany Regan CLC, Regional Account Coordinator Acelleron.

Donor milk is rapidly becoming the standard supplement to mothers’ milk for preterm infants in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). This has led to greater demand for safe pasteurized donor human milk from nonprofit milk banks like Mothers’ Milk Bank Northeast.

“We are beyond grateful for moms like Brittany and organizations like Acelleron`. Without the generosity, commitment, and compassion of people like this, we wouldn’t be able to serve all the babies who need us. Last year we provided approximately 1.5 million meals to premature babies. We are proud of those meals, and we know there are a lot more tummies to fill with safe, pasteurized, donor milk,” said Deborah Youngblood, Executive Director of Mothers’ Milk Bank Northeast.
