Get Inspired! Introducing Two of Our Milk Donor Heroes

For many families, donor milk isn’t something they learn about until they truly need it — often late at night, under stress, and while making critical decisions about their newborn’s health. That’s not how we want anyone to first encounter something so important. By sharing real stories from our community, we can raise awareness and offer support long before that moment arrives. It’s one of the reasons we’re so excited to introduce two of our milk donor heroes: Courtney and her son, Cillian . . .

Can you tell us a little about yourself and your family?

My husband and I both grew up in Massachusetts. We knew each other as teenagers but married in our 30s. When we became pregnant with our son, Cillian, we were living in Florida and decided to move back home to be closer to friends and family. Cillian was born just before Christmas and recently celebrated his first birthday — it’s funny to think he’s already been in our lives in 2024, 2025, and 2026! We also have three dogs, so it’s a full house. I’ve been a dog trainer for fifteen years and absolutely love my career.

How did you first learn about milk donation?

I had an oversupply almost immediately after coming home from the hospital, so I quickly had to learn how to pump just to stay comfortable. I was storing the milk, but couldn’t use it all myself. I looked into donating to a local hospital NICU and found Mothers’ Milk Bank Northeast. I was elated — I had no idea such an incredible organization existed. I called right away and started the process of becoming a donor.

Even after my oversupply became more manageable, I kept pumping because it brought me so much joy. Thinking about babies being nourished by my donation is hard to describe. It truly feels like a calling.

What has surprised you most about being a milk donor?

Definitely how incredibly supportive the milk bank is. I never expected praise or recognition, but the team continues to show such genuine gratitude. You truly champion women throughout their donation journey.

How does it feel knowing your milk has helped babies in need?

I’m tearing up just thinking about it. I have friends whose children started life in the NICU, and they’ve shared how donor milk gave their babies a fighting chance. Knowing that makes me so emotional. The impact donors make is real, and it’s profound.

Has your family played a role in your donation journey?

My husband has been the backbone of my milk donation journey. He’s spent countless hours creating recipes to support milk supply, helping during pumping sessions, organizing bags of milk, and beaming with pride when we fill a donation box. I couldn’t do this without him.

Unfortunately, my mother very suddenly passed away this year. She was so proud of me for donating milk and talked about it often. She supported me every step of the way — buying pump parts, helping me learn how to pump, and cheering me on throughout my donation journey. To honor her, we’re asking people to donate to Mothers’ Milk Bank Northeast in lieu of flowers at her upcoming services.

That’s such a beautiful way to honor her. Do you think Cillian will enjoy hearing about your donation journey one day?

Absolutely. I’ll definitely share my donor journey with Cillian. I also share my story with anyone who will listen because so many people don’t know milk donation is even an option. Spreading the word is such an important way to get others involved.
